Freddie Roach: Manny Pacquiao will KO Oscar De La Hoya

Immediately after Manny Pacquiao TKO'd David Diaz, rumors came out that it would be Edwin Valero as his next opponent...

Back in the Philippines, Manny told reporters that he wants to fight Ricky Hatton next, though a fight with Valero is jut fine...

But just several days ago, Bob Arum made public his intention to match Manny Pacquiao against Humberto Soto...

Now, suddenly Freddie Roach came out and said, "Manny will KO Oscar De La Hoya..."

Is there a basis to what Roach is claiming?

Do you want to see Manny fight Oscar?

Do you really thing it is a mismatch?

Does Pacquiao deserves to be De La Hoya's last fight?

Which would be bigger, a Pacquiao-Hattan or a Pacquiao-De La Hoya fight?

Who has more influence over Manny Pacquiao, Freddie Roack or Bob Arum?

Pacquiao vs. De La Hoya: Sooner or Later

Each have bouts scheduled against TBA opponents, and HBO has already lined up several decent scraps between lesser names. Superstars Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, and Roy Jones Jr. The fall boxing lineup looks to be highly entertaining.

But despite the exciting potential, boxing still needs a jumpstart to excite more casual fans. That impetus would come from a Manny Pacquiao-Oscar De La Hoya fight.

These potential fights will likely prevent any Pacquiao-De La Hoya bout in the mix, his future will suffer. These potential fights will likely prevent any Pacquiao-De La Hoya will probably throw down against Miguel Cotto or Felix Trinidad in early December. These potential fights will likely prevent any Pacquiao-De La Hoya will want to go out with a win, and the chances of him doing so against Miguel Cotto or Felix Trinidad in early December. Further, De La Hoya will want to go out with a win, and the chances of him doing so against Miguel Cotto or Felix Trinidad in early December. And considering the fact that De La Hoya will probably throw down against Miguel Cotto are slim. Pacquiao will fight on November 15 against Edwin Valero, and De La Hoya bout in the fall. As or right now, it looks unlikely that the Filipino and Mexican-American will square off.

De La Hoya will need one more bout after his December fight, and that bout needs to be against Pacquiao.

If they squared off, millions of people across the world would intently watch. Oscar, with his celebrity looks and slew of other talents, has attracted fans of all kinds; Pacquiao is the hero of the Philippines. The two pugilists are the most popular of their kind in the world. The matchup makes perfect sense.

De La Hoya is not the great fighter he used to be, so it would be interesting to see if he could keep the robust Filipino off of him. Pacquiao walks around at 150 plus pounds in between fights, and considering he’s carried his power up with him as he rises in weight, it would be fascinating to see how he handled a welterweight frame. The fight would likely be competitive as well.

De La Hoya vs Pacquiao Fight | Dec 6, 2008

Oscar De La Hoya has nearly wrapped up a deal to finish his boxing career Dec. 6 against Filipino star Manny Pacquiao, two people with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because any deal won't be announced until Thursday, said De La Hoya's long-stalled talks with Pacquiao recently revived when the sides found an acceptable way to split the possible $100 million in revenue from what's certain to be boxing's most lucrative fight since De La Hoya's split-decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year.

Barring any last-minute changes of heart in a sometimes contentious negotiation, the fight will bring together boxing's most bankable star and arguably its most talented fighter at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

It hasn't been an easy match to make. Both boxers must make physical sacrifices for the 147-pound bout, with De La Hoya dropping down to welterweight for the first time in nearly eight years while Pacquiao bulks up to the heaviest weight of his career by far.

The fighters' camps also argued over the split of the purse, with De La Hoya angling for 70 percent while Pacquiao pursued a 40 percent cut. The resolution to this impasse wasn't immediately clear, but should be announced Thursday.

De La Hoya (39-5-0, 30 KOs), the six-division champion and Olympic gold medalist, repeatedly has said he won't fight again after this year. After a proposed rematch with Mayweather in September was scuttled by Mayweather's retirement, De La Hoya has struggled to find a suitable opponent for his final bout before turning his full attention to his burgeoning promotions company and other business interests.

De La Hoya now thinks he has his man in Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KOs), the five-division champion widely considered the world's best pound-for-pound fighter. Pacquiao hasn't fought since stopping David Diaz in late June to claim the WBC lightweight title in his first fight at 135 pounds.

Pacquiao will have to move up to welterweight to fight the 5-foot-10 De La Hoya, a surprising weight surge for a 5-foot-6 fighter who began his career at 106 pounds.

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's longtime trainer, has said his fighter won't have trouble maintaining his peerless hand speed at that weight, since Pacquiao routinely puts on 10 pounds or more in the 24 hours between weighing in for his bouts and actually stepping in the ring.

De La Hoya beat Steve Forbes by unanimous decision in his most recent fight, but has won just three of his six bouts over the past five years. He considered Miguel Cotto and Sergio Mora for his farewell fight, but realized the most lucrative challenge would be Pacquiao, the relentless Filipino hero who has won eight straight fights since early 2005.

Oscar De La Hoya Wants 70-30 Revenue Split, Manny Pacquiao Wants at Least 40%

The boxing match that would unquestionably be the biggest of the year -- Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao -- will apparently not take place because the fighters can't agree on a revenue split.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com, De La Hoya has insisted that he should receive 70% of the revenue from their fight, which could easily make $100 million. Pacquiao's camp realizes that De La Hoya is the bigger draw and will get the bigger slice of the pie, but the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world won't settle for less than 40%.

I would love to see a De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight, mostly because I think Pacquaio is the best thing going in boxing right now, and fighting De La Hoya would expose him to the biggest audience possible. But even though De La Hoya and Pacquiao both agreed that they would split their significant weight difference in and fight at 147 pounds, they couldn't agree on how to split the dollars. So the fight appears to be off.

Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum is holding on tight to his dream of pitting his star player, Manny Pacquiao against the Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya in the same ring together. According to reports, the idea of the mega match-up is gaining steam and Arum is working closely with De La Hoya's promotional comapany to try and make it happen.

Arum admitted on Monday that De La Hoya is on their radar and that they are talking with De La Hoya’s Golden Boy
Promotions about the possible clash with Pacquiao.

In an interview on dzSR Sports Radio 918 on Monday, Arum stated: “I’m not the genius who thought of that idea,” Arum added: “But the media liked it, and when I presented it to Richard Shaeffer of Golden Boy, he liked the idea.”
